Hospitality Staff Considerations


Employees must be paid at least the minimum hourly wage rate per hour worked ($20.00 per hour for fully trained employees). The average pay in hospitality varies depending on the region, location, job, and skill level of the employee. Your hospitality employees can work part-time or full time and the same work rights apply to both. Part-time is common in the hospitality industry with many working less than 30 hours a week as hospitality jobs don’t follow the regular 9 am to 5 pm schedule. Changing shifts per week are also common in NZ hospitality businesses, with employers having a weekly roster that’s based on the needs of the business.


Hospitality employees have minimum employment rights, including minimum wages, working hours, holidays, and leave and breaks. As an employer, you must also provide employees with a written agreement to help employees gain an understanding of the workplace and avoid potential disagreements. If the employee decides to join KiwiSaver, the employer must contribute an amount at least 3% of the wages as well (or more if you’re
feeling particularly generous).
