The holiday season is a great time to rest and relax as everyone catches up with family and friends. However, many New Zealanders feel extra social and financial stresses during the holiday season because of the pressure to create a magical time for our tamariki and whanau. It can be stressful yes, but it doesn’t have to be! Here are some easy tips to help you enjoy the festive season:

In the summer, instead of running around like a headless chicken, try to spend more time in nature. The sun shines more and the days are longer! Go to the beach or even plant some vegetable seeds. Feel the vitamin D on your skin. There are many great ways to connect with nature, so find time to recharge. Go barefoot and feel the sand or grass between your toes. Be present – look at Christmas lights, listen to Christmas carols, or call your friends to catch up. I know it sounds cheesy and cliché, but Christmas really is the time to reconnect with the people, and things that you love.

Giving also doesn’t have to be expensive! Focus on giving your presence, time, and kindness. You can simply give a compliment to a friend or offer to help someone. You can do some arts and crafts or bake treats to give away. Donating old books, clothes or toys is also a great idea, along with visiting shelters in your community to offer companionship.

Don’t let exercise take a back seat and don’t be afraid to say no to an invitation. The holiday season can get stressful and busy if you don’t take a rain check to every single event you’re invited to. You can organise a catch up in the new year instead. Take quick walks around the block to help you relax and clear your mind.

We wish you all a relaxing and fun holiday break with your hoa me te whanau, and we’ll see you all in the new year!
